What is "echoart"?
------------------

Echoart is a C program, which responds to or drops ICMP echo request packets
based on a pre-defined sequence. Echoart can be used to return crude ascii
art in response to pings from a Cisco router.

How does "echoart" help me run my network / do my job? 
------------------------------------------------------

Uhm. I could probably come up with some nonsense about it being a testing
or diagnostic tool, but in reality, it is an unabashed toy. Call it a
"stupid net trick".


How does "echoart" work? 
------------------------

Echoart works by intercepting icmp echo request packets and consulting
a pattern template to determine whether or not to respond to a specific
echo request. It then uses libnet to inject responses back into the network
as necessary.

Requirements
------------

Libpcap 0.8.3 or newer (http://www.tcpdump.org)
Libnet 1.1.1 or newer (http://www.packetfactory.net/Projects/Libnet/)

Compiling
---------

Make targets are provided for Linux and OSX.

./configure.pl {OSX|Linux}
make
sudo make install

Usage
-----

Step 1: Insert a rule in your host firewall to block incoming icmp echo 
        requests

  (OSX) ipfw add 1 deny icmp from any to any in icmptype 8
(Linux) iptables -I INPUT -p icmp --icmp-type echo-request -j DROP

Step 2: Create a 70 column data file containing the ascii art to be displayed

NOTE: 70 columns was selected because it is the default "response block" 
      size for the extended ping command under Cisco IOS

I have included a basic perl script named banner.pl, which allows you to 
easily create a text vertical text message. Banner.pl writes the output, in
proper echoart format, to the file of your choice. In the data file, the
'!' character corresponds to a ping response, a '.' corresponds to a 
dropped ping. If you are manually creating a file, make sure you strip the
linefeeds from your data file and only use these two characters.

Step 3: Launch echoart

-i IFNAME               specify device name to listen on
-t N                    reset ascii drawing after N seconds idle
-x N                    create N buckets
-a FILENAME             name of file containing ascii art
-f                      run in foreground mode
-d                      run in daemon mode
-h                      display this usage information

Normal usage will be something like:

sudo ./echoart -t 3 -x 100 -a /tmp/sample.data -d

This will allow 100 concurrent "sessions". Each session will be recycled after
three (3) seconds of inactivity.

Step 4: Ping your host from a Cisco router, or using a Cisco-style ping tool
        like Nikhef ping. If pinging from a Unix host, make your xterm 71 
	columns wide.
